We live busy, complex lives in a society over-saturated by technology, corporate culture and mass media. It’s not surprising that we're often left feeling disconnected with ourselves, our values, our passions, our inner selves, our ability to cope and ultimately with our true identity. The last time many of us truly felt ourselves was when we were children. Blissfully naive, unburdened by stress and responsibility, free from judgements or expectations. The beauty of childhood, is the ability to unabashedly be yourself.
As we mature into teenagers we become increasingly aware of our external image, we compare ourselves with our peers, or worse yet, celebrities or media icons. We also become aware of the expectations from family, friends, teachers (often to suit their own agendas). Many of us learn to please others by putting their needs before our own in an attempt to make others happy (an impossible mission). Often we are left feeling inadequate, that we don’t measure up this increases our insecurities decreasing our self esteem. If we learn to trust external factors more than our inner self it contributes to a lifetime of stress, anxiety and depression.
As we get older our lives become ever more complex, in the process we become more disconnected, life's set setbacks and losses can contribute to stress, anxiety and depression. When we lose touch with the value of our inner self we work against ourselves, we feel awkward, we mistrust our intuition, we often use self-distructive tools in a futile attempt to cope, eventually we lose touch with what really makes us happy. Lack of self awareness, decreased self esteem in turn limits our growth potential, our ability to cope and ultimately our ability to evolve.
